Your Instructor
Lizette Cloete
OTR/L, CADDCT®, CDP® Skills2Care Certified
“Think Different” Dementia’s owner, graduated as an Occupational Therapist from the University of Pretoria in South Africa in 1992.
Lizette is the only Occupational Therapist in South Carolina that is certified in Skills2Care. Skills2Care is an evidence based and care-partner driven framework designed to teach care-partners how to recognize a resident’s unmet need and avoid triggering challenging dementia behaviors. Skills2Care has been shown to decrease the intensity and frequency of challenging behaviors by using a problem solving based approach. This approach helps to decrease staff burnout, staff turnover and improves the outcomes of residents with dementia.
Among her many accomplishments, she has served on the South Carolina Occupational Therapy Association’s Board of Directors from 2008-2014, where she held the offices of President, Past-President and Treasurer. She also served on the Board of Directors of the Parkinson’s Group of the Ozarks from 2003-2008 in a variety of roles.
Lizette is also a frequent guest speaker on dementia related topics at community colleges and universities. She has twice presented at the South Carolina Occupational Therapy Association’s annual conference on various dementia topics. The most recent one was February 2021 on the topic “Newer Research into Preventing Dementing”. She has also frequently presented at community events on multiple different topics over the past 30 years. She also presented at the South Carolina Assisted Living Associations’ fall conference in 2021. She was a contributor to the National Parkinson’s Foundations publication titled “Activities of Daily Living: Practical Pointers For Parkinson’s Disease”.
Currently, Lizette actively engages people with dementia and their care-partners in multiple online formats including Facebook, YouTube and LinkedIn. She has a weekly podcast called “The Baffled Brain: Demystifying Dementia” where she answers dementia related questions on a live-stream podcast. Her private Facebook Group called “Think Different” Dementia Education Group has more than 500 members.
She has helped countless people all over the world with the management of challenging behaviors common to dementia, including South Africa, Kenya, Australia, The United Kingdom and even as far as Singapore and The Philippines.
She and her husband emigrated to the USA in 1993, and currently reside in South Carolina. They have 2 daughters and one son-in-love, 2 cats, one dog and 9 chickens.

“Mike was a very engaging presenter. His passion for his work and his servant heart showed through in the way he presented the material. He was able to engage all the attendees throughout the two days and pushed us out of our comfort zone to truly learn how to go out and present the materials to other clinicians and to direct service consumers.
I especially love the additional marketing tools that he provided the group and the continuous encouragement that we go out and teach the material to others and not just sit on the learning we have acquired. “
Kailani B. Talton, OTR/L
Occupational Therapist
“I learned the types of Dementia and how to assist the client to engage in functional activity to prevent or decrease agitation of the caregiver and client. I also learned how to conduct an interview regarding the client’s abilities, physical function and cognitive status to best determine what level of assistance is needed to provide the best support. This course helped me to understand how I can utilize my experience and knowledge to assist those with dementia and provide support the caregiver.”
Yolanda Bowdre, OTR/L

I enjoyed the course! It was amazing and Mike made it super fun for us. I loved it that its via zoom, very convenient for everyone! Ive learned so many ideas on how to manage my patients through the experiences of other clinicians. The course was worth of my time, highly recommended!!!
– Dr. Giselle Tan, PT, DPT
Thank you for facilitating the ONLINE Live Alzheimer’s Disease and Dementia Care Seminar. I have been wanting to take the course for a long time now. Even though I am already an Independent Certified Positive Approach to Care Trainer and Coach, I am excited to become a Certified Dementia Practitioner. I did learn some things from the course and look forward to adding them to my current trainings.
I still believe Positive Approach to Care (PAC) is the missing link to effectively caring for persons living with dementia. I was very impressed with your presentation style. I have attended many terrible continuing education courses with power point readers. You really engaged the class well and you could see NO ONE on video.
Your “volunteer victor” scheme was genius in helping people to form presentation skills so they can actually use this information. I found you to be very positive and encouraging and it really helped to motivate me to form some goals for 2020 and step out of my comfort zone.
Thank you for the experience. I hope someday we can collaborate on something fun and maybe I see you as part of PAC cause you are ROCK!!!

“I already know most of the information on the CDP slides and book/manual since I’ve worked with the adult population for the past 5 years, but Mike engaged and encouraged all the attendees to participate by presenting on a slide on two to develop confidence in presenting the materials to others and that was very beneficial because I was forced out of my comfort zone.
He also added real world information on how to market our new learning/certification in order to impact more service consumers in our community, and most of those are new knowledge.”
Kailani B. Talton, OTR/L
Occupational Therapist
“The instructor was great. Dr. Chua kept the class active and had many experiences to share. He encouraged all of us to be the very best we can be. Loved learning with other health care providers with the same interest in being the very best for our residents, clients, families or loved ones with Alzheimer’s and dementia.”
Jennifer Foster, LPN, LNHA
Administrator
“Better understanding of how to present information to other healthcare workers and families of patients with dementia. Great class, easy to follow, very informative.”
Molly Kathleen Guzik, COTA

Dr. Mike kept the energy going, always made sure we were participating since it was an online course, and always pulled in experiences from the students. I learned a lot from everyone’s sharing and questions. I feel more confident as a PT treating patients with dementia now.
